Golden Makeup Look

Here's a look I did recently for The Asian Beautifier's blog competition where I had to create either a Golden Goddess or Sparkle Diva makeup look. Of course I love gold so I went for that option!
I wanted to go for a dramatic, yet glamorous, look so I took inspiration from Cleopatra and went for heavy black eyeliner, lots of gold and statement brows (I used a black eyeshadow to make them really stand out but it came out a little messy :S )

Purple Eyes

I know I tend to be quite boring with my makeup looks so I thought I'd attempt to do something different today. A few months ago I was given an eyeshadow quad from No7 as part of their Christmas range and it had the most amazing blues, greens and purples (I'll do a seperate post on these as I COMPLETELY forgot to take pics... silly me!!) The matte purple stood out to me the most because it was so vibrant and looks so lovely with brown eye/tanned skin.
So anyway, here's my take on the 'purple smoky eye'. It's not amazing but it is my first try!

Beauty: A Man's Perspective

Beauty blogs are such a female dominated market that we usually forget guys have an opinion on beauty too. For this reason I thought I'd dedicate today's post to the guys and find out what they really think about our beauty obsession.

Bear in mind that this doesn't mean we should wear makeup for a guy's pleasure... just that it'd be quite interesting to see what they think about it!

I've enlisted the help of two guys who will give their no holds barred opinion on everything from lipstick to beards (they aren't too keen on them btw...)

Do you prefer girls wearing a lot of makeup or nothing at all?
Jash - I think girls look nice in makeup. They shouldn't leave the house without it... in fact they should wake up wearing it! I like it when they make an effort with their appearance and do their makeup nicely, it shows they aren't lazy... and no one likes a slob right?!
Nas - When they wear a lot of makeup it just makes them look like a clown. I think it looks nice when it's toned down a bit.

What about bright eye and lip colours?
J - Pink or red lipstick always look nice - especially red. Heavy eye makeup looks good too if the girl's going on a night out because it shows they've made an effort.
N - Lip gloss always looks nice but when girls wear really bright colours it looks like they're trying a bit tooo hard.

Let's talk about hair... straight/curly, long short?
J - I don't really have a preference as long as it's soft and healthy. These days everyone has straight hair so it's a nice change to see girls with curly hair - it makes them intriguing.
N - I'm not keen on short hair but I think some girls can pull it off, like Rihanna.

Do you prefer short nails or long acrylics?
J - Short nails are nicer. I can't stand it when they're really long - it just looks scary! I'm not too keen on wierd colours either - it should be something feminine and neutral like pink.
N - Crazy long nails make a girl look too ghetto and I can't stand that. Simple is better.

Opinion on eyebrows and facial hair please?
J - Messy or bushy eyebrows are a big NO. They should be kept tidy and shaped to suit the girl's face. I hate it when they're really thin as well.
N - My advice is that if you like a guy don't ever, ever let him see you with unkept eyebrows and facial hair - it really puts us off!

What do you/don't you like about perfume?
J - When it's overpowering and strong it makes me feel a bit sick. But something sweet and floral is always nice. Chanel Coco madmoiselle is the nicest perfume I've come across on a woman.
N - I love it when a girl wears perfume! it doesn't have to be anything in particular, as long as it's got a sweet scent.

Name a celebrity's makeup you like and one whos you don't...
J - I never notice a celeb's makeup but I think Shakira always looks good. I can't stand Britney Spears - she just looks like a slob 24/7.
N - Cheryl Cole always looks nice and glamorous. I don't like Jordan - there's just nothing nice about her!

Well there you have it... this is just an insight into what men think about beauty (two guy's opinions don't exactly represent the entire male population - but you get the idea). I hope you found it interesting nonetheless. There are some things that only a girl friend will understand (like a shared love for muddy brown nails) but that's fine by me!

Would you... leave the house without makeup?

There are some women who wouldn't dream of leaving the house without a bit of slap on, then there are some women who just need some bronzer and mascara and they're ready to go. Unfortunately I fall in to the latter. Since sixth form, when I discovered the wonderful world of makeup (I know - i'm a late starter), I've had this thing where I have to wear makeup everytime I go out. It's strange, but for some reason I feel naked without it!

I blame the media for our insecurities. In a world where we're surrounded by billboards and TV adverts featuring impossibly beautiful women who set the standards so high, how can we feel good about ourselves?! Then there are the tabloids and gossip mags that love to poke fun at the actress or singer who has - shock horror - left their house without any makeup, so that it's now become socially acceptable to call someone ugly. There's nothing wrong with leaving the house without any makeup but I'm sure a lot of us feel 'ugly' or 'plain' without it.

Eva Longoria - beautiful with or without makeup in my opinion!

My skin isn't even that bad. It has a few blemishes and problem areas, but it's nothing that a bit of concealer can't fix. Every morning, when I get ready for work, I apply foundation, bronzer/blusher, top and bottom eyeliner and a lip balm or lipstick. To some people that might not seem like much (I've seen girls pile on ten times more makeup then that!) but to me it seems quite excessive. I mean, what happened to natural beauty?! Now that the weather is sweltering hot and my good friend Hay Fever is back and badder then ever I've found myself opting to wear less makeup.

Today I even managed to leave the house with NO EYE MAKEUP! Those who know me will know that I always wear eyeliner - they never see me without it - not even the mister! So let's see if I can keep it going for the rest of the week. I might even do a FOTD post.

Can anyone else not live without makeup... or is it just me?!

Jai Ho Inspired Makeup Look

I know the song is old but I absolutely LOVED Nicole Scherzinger's makeup/outfits in the Jai Ho video so, during a boring afternoon I thought I'd recreate the makeup look, as you do...

Now, I'm not attempting to be like Nicole Scherzinger in any way (I realise she is way hotter and so my look is just a version from the vid!) But I'm sure you get the overall idea - lots of pink, bold eyes, bindi, etc....

Here's how to get the look:

Face: Nars Sheer Glow Foundation in Barcelona all over face. Barry M Blusher in Pink Orchid over the cheekbones. Ruby & Millie Bronzer below cheekbones as a contour and Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick on the top of the cheekbones as a highlight.

Eyes: Urban Decay Sin Primer Potion all over eyelids. Dark brown eyeshadow from Too Faced used to define and thicken eyebrows. Too Faced eyeshadow in Velvet Revolver all over eyelids (the Sin primer makes the colour come out really intense!) Gosh Liquid Eyeliner over the top lashline and slightly flicked out at the ends. Shu Uemura Gel Liner over the lower lashline (apply it quite thickly for a more intense look). Finish with  two coats of mascara (I forgot which one I used :-S) or you could apply falsies (I wasn't bothered). Add highlight to the eyebrows with Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick.

Lips: Mac Lipstick in Girl About Town lightly applied on lips (like a stained effect) and Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Gloss for a fuller pout!

Extras: If you want to go for a more Asian/Eastern look add a Bindi!

Makeup on the train...

This morning didn't start off well for me - I woke up at 7.50am and I had to leave by 8. Neddless to say I was rushing around like mad woman trying to get my clothes on and make my hair look presentable. I didn't have any time for makeup so I shoved a bunch of stuff in my bag to put on in the train.

Big mistake.

No only were people giving me strange looks when I made my 'mascara face' (you know the one where your mouth is hanging open randomly...) I couldn't put my eyeliner on without smudging it at least twice. And I had blusher going everywhere. :S

Now my question is... what is the most effective way to put makeup on when your on the train/tube/bus?
I think I really have to master this because I always see other women effortlessly applying their lippie and liner... and wonder how they do it?!!!??
